Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:
Road crews are getting ready to start shifting eastbound lanes on the Tacoma end of the bridge to the west so work can start on the new eastbound alignment.
This week they'll be installing new drainage, and that will mean single lane closures most nights. One eastbound lane will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. and one westbound lane from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
Caissons: The Gig Harbor caisson should reach its final depth, 57 feet below the mud line of the Narrows floor, on Thursday. After another concrete pour on the Tacoma caisson this week, dredge equipment will move across the channel to begin digging there.
Anchorages: Concrete pours are scheduled on the Tacoma and Gig Harbor anchorages this week.
The new off- and on-ramps at 36th Street Northwest will get their first test as commuters adjust to the new accesses. Stone Drive ramps on eastbound Highway 16 will remain open to some construction traffic but will be closed to the public.
Dramatic changes will continue along eastbound Highway 16 near the 24th Street overpass as crews continue removing dirt for the new toll plaza.
Q. When they landscape for the new bridge, will they do anything to hide that health club at 36th Street (in Gig Harbor)? It used to be invisible and now it's practically sitting on the highway.
A. The landscaping plan calls for a narrow strip of trees, but the trees are unlikely to obscure the view of the Gig Harbor Athletic Club.
