Special Reports

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

Look for nighttime lane closures at both ends of the existing Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

On the Tacoma side, crews will be restriping lanes between the Jackson Street ramps and preparing to shift eastbound traffic to the right so crews can work in the middle of the roadway. One lane will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. They'll shift traffic sometime Friday night.

On the Gig Harbor side, one lane of Highway 16 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday as crews prepare to shift eastbound traffic north of the new retaining wall in the median. The plan is to shift one lane next month and the other in August.

Caissons: Construction managers say dredging on the Gig Harbor caisson will be finished Tuesday, leaving the tower foundation in its permanent, final position. Next they'll pump concrete into the bottom, cap the top and call it finished around the end of June. Dredging should start Friday on the Tacoma caisson after a concrete pour Wednesday.

Anchorages: One pour is scheduled Thursday on the west anchorage. On the east anchorage, crews will start setting anchor tubes, used to secure the wires in the main cables.

Q. Where does the Tacoma Narrows bridge project stop and the new carpool-lane project begin?

A. Approximately at the pedestrian walkway over Highway 16 near Jackson Street.
