Special Reports

BRIDGE UPDATE

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

Landscaping: Lots of planting this week along new road cuts on the Gig Harbor side. Watch for work along eastbound Highway 16 near 36th Street Northwest. Still a few more trees to come down at the site of the toll facility in the vicinity of 24th Street Northwest.

Roadways: No lane closures scheduled this week.

Crews will continue working on drainage systems near the new 36th Street Northwest interchange, which is to open next month.

Finish work, including guardrails and striping, will continue on 22nd Avenue Northwest, which should be open to traffic next week.

Caissons: Tacoma and Gig Harbor caissons now extend 100 feet below the water surface and continue to grow downward.

The Gig Harbor caisson is to touch down in mid-December; the Tacoma caisson shortly after New Year's.

Q&A

Q. I see the trailers have finally arrived at the new office park next to the concrete plant. When is that supposed to open and who's going to be using it?

A. The mobile offices should be up and running by the middle of next month, according to the Department of Transportation.

The facility will be used mainly by construction managers and superintendents as well as for parking by bridge workers and road workers.
