Special Reports

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

The big excitement this week is at the Gig Harbor caisson, which is supposed to touch down on the Narrows floor Monday afternoon. If all goes well, concrete crews will do a double pour on the caisson Tuesday to provide weight to help hold it securely on the bottom.

A pour is scheduled on the Tacoma-side caisson on Thursday.

Anchorages: Crews are finishing up the excavation of the Gig Harbor anchorage and hope to coat the walls and floor with a thin coat of pressurized concrete this week. A regular concrete pour is scheduled for Wednesday on the Tacoma anchorage.

Roadways: A delay in receiving traffic-signal equipment is holding up the opening of new ramps at 36th Street Northwest. The new access to Highway 16 now is not expected to open until after Christmas.

Construction offices in a temporary office park on 14th Avenue Northwest in Gig Harbor, near the end of the bridge, are now open and several dozen TNC employees have moved in.

Q: Are they going to have any more of those public meetings where they tell everybody what's going on with the bridge?

A: Yes. Those take place quarterly. The next one is on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Gig Harbor High School.
