Crews have wrapped up repair work on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge sooner than expected, and all lanes should be open to traffic by tonight, state transportation officials said.
Workers spotted damage in the right lane of westbound Highway 16 near the west tower during routine inspections Monday and put in a steel plate over the road as a temporary fix.
On Tuesday, they shut down the lane while they ripped out rotted asphalt and concrete, reattached bolts and repaired damaged rebar.
They then poured new concrete and put down a fresh coat of asphalt, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Supervisors thought they would have to shut down the left westbound lane today for similar work. After taking a closer look, they've decided that won't be necessary, said Lloyd Brown, a state transportation spokesman.
