Bridge Update: Nov. 28

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

The first prefabricated pieces of the large canopy that will cover the toll booths for the new bridge are scheduled to arrive at the construction site Monday.

More parts of the toll canopy will be trucked to the site over the next three weeks and will be stored in the toll plaza area, west of the 24th Street overpass, until they are ready to be installed next month.

Also on Monday, the contractor installing a fabric screen next to the Performance Golf Center in Gig Harbor will begin drilling holes for the massive steel poles that will support the 32-foot-high screen. The screen is intended to shield eastbound drivers on Highway 16 from lights illuminating the driving range.

Workers will put in walls inside the new toll operations building this week, and, on the Tacoma side of the Narrows, they’ll erect the concrete block walls of the new bridge maintenance building.

Wire that will be used for the bridge’s main cable will be hauled to the site on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and stored on new asphalt east of the Tacoma anchorage.

Paving crews will lay down the second of three coats of asphalt between the toll plaza and 24th Street.

Tower crews have concrete pours scheduled on both the Gig Harbor and Tacoma tower legs this week and also will work on the first concrete cross strut connecting the tower legs.

Road crews will put the dress face on the new retaining wall on westbound Highway 16 at Jackson Avenue in Tacoma.
