Bridge crews scheduled to remove ‘bird cages’ from Gig Harbor side

Weather permitting, crews will remove the so-called “bird cage” from atop the southern leg of the Gig Harbor tower of the new Tacoma Narrows bridge today, state transportation officials said.

Crews worked inside the large white boxes to build the 510-foot concrete towers that will support the suspension bridge. Each tower consists of two legs. All four bird cages ultimately will be disassembled in four pieces and lowered by crane.

If winds are too high today, the bird cage on the southern leg of the Gig Harbor tower will be removed Sunday. Crews are expected to remove the bird cage from the northern tower Monday. That might require some traffic slowdowns between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., transportation officials said.
