Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:
You can watch the forms come off the middle strut of the Gig Harbor tower this week, revealing the big double X’s in bas relief.
Higher on the Gig Harbor tower, crews will be pouring the leg sections where the top strut will be attached. Those sections will be solid concrete and poured in two 7-foot sections.
On the Tacoma tower, crews will finish up the 26th section of the northern leg and pour the top deck of the middle strut.
Anchorage crews will strip the formwork off the newly poured top deck and get ready to set the saddles on the top corners. They’ll install the saddle base plates and rockers this week.
On the eastern anchorage, where the saddles already are in place, crews will spend the week installing cable-spinning equipment.
In the torn-up median area of Highway 16 near the Tacoma end of the bridge, crews will be installing drainage pipes and placing rock in preparation for paving. The work will be behind concrete barriers, so no impact on traffic is expected.
One eastbound lane on the Gig Harbor side near the toll plaza will be closed from 7 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday. Crews will be setting the support posts for automatic tolling equipment. Crews working on the toll operations building near the 24th Street overpass will start pouring sidewalks this week and begin constructing the parking lot.
