Special Reports

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

Tacoma Narrows Constructors will try again this week to connect the new Jackson Avenue on-ramp to Highway 16.

For the past two weeks, rain has stopped efforts to do the last bit of paving.

If the weather stays relatively dry, all access to westbound 16 from Jackson will be shut down from 3 a.m. Monday around the clock until 11 p.m. Friday so construction can take place.

TNC also plans to close one lane of Stone Drive on the Gig Harbor side during the day every day this week while crews extend a retaining wall. Flaggers will direct traffic through the construction area.

Anchorage workers on the Gig Harbor side will pour the top deck of the west anchorage on Thursday. On the Tacoma side, workers are preparing temporary foundations and assembling equipment for the cable-spinning operation, which will start in August.

Tower crews will add a total of four 17.5-foot sections to the tower legs this week. Then they’ll pause to raise the tower cranes up to their new level – 556 feet.

On the Gig Harbor side, crews will pour the floor of the middle strut Monday.
