The children of David and Crystal Brame have changed their names.
At school, the 8-year-old Haley and 5-year-old David Jr. have told their teachers that their last name is Judson, their mother's maiden name.
The children have lived with their grandparents, Lane and Patty Judson, since their father, Tacoma's police chief, fatally shot their mother and himself April 26.
Legally, the children's names still are Brame, but they chose to change their names themselves. Crystal Brame had petitioned to have her name changed back to Judson as part of her application for a divorce, but the divorce was never finalized. The monument at her grave reads "Crystal DeEtte Judson."

The subject came up Wednesday and Thursday, as Lane and Patty Judson spoke to reporters about the revised claim they've filed against the City of Tacoma.
School has been difficult, the Judsons said, because they remember how much their daughter enjoyed taking her children to school. The two have enjoyed being back with their classmates, the grandparents said, though Haley was taken aback to see a place card for her labeled "Haley B."
"Grandma," she told Patty Judson, "tell them to change it." Haley's teacher apologized and changed the card immediately, Patty Judson said.
