State employees based in the Tri-Cities participate in statewide ‘unity rallies’

State employees join a “unity rally” on the sidewalk Thursday outside the Department of Social and Health Services at 1120 N. Edison St. in Kennewick.

It’s one of 90 sites across the state where employees are participating in the planned events, with the prospect of a government shutdown looming.

The other local “unity rally” is at the Ecology Richland Field Office, 3100 Port of Benton Blvd.

The rallies are being coordinated by the Washington Federation of State Employees and the American Federation of State, Federal and Municipal Employees, according to a news release.

Thousands of workers from 31 state agencies could be temporarily laid off if no budget deal is in place by June 30, the unions said.
