Division Street Bridge painting project to start May 29

MOUNT VERNON - The state Department of Transportation will begin its painting project of the Division Street Bridge in Mount Vernon on May 29, with detours beginning June 8.

The painting project is expected to take 11 months and will limit traffic to westbound only.

Eastbound traffic will be rerouted to head north on Avon Allen Road, east on Highway 20 and south on Interstate 5 across the Skagit River.

For eastbound drivers headed to Mount Vernon, this detour route will add about 15 minutes to the usual travel time.

Bicyclists and pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge both ways during most of the project, according to the Department of Transportation project webpage. There will also be a free shuttle service to take pedestrians across the bridge.

The Department of Transportation expects that there will be several full closures of the bridge. They will be restricted to nights and weekends.

During these full closures, the shuttle service will still be available to pedestrians.

The bridge will remain accessible to emergency vehicles headed both directions during the project, even during full closures.
