Friday's Prep Roundup: Anacortes places second in district track and field meet
The Anacortes High School boys' track and field team placed second Friday at the nine-team Northwest 2A District Championships at Lakewood High School.
The Seahawks, who finished behind Lynden, had four athletes finish among the top two of their events on the meet's second day to guarantee them berths in the state meet.
Austin Duchene was first in the 400 (48.44 seconds), Maverick Ball first in the 800 (1:55.88), Spencer Roberts second in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches), and Dylan Rowell first in the 3,200 (8:49.56) and second in the 800 (1:57.72).
Anacortes was first in the boys' 1,600 relay (3:21.58) and second in the boys' 400 relay (42.47)
Burlington-Edison's Evan Forthun guaranteed himself three state meet berths, placing second in the boys' 400 (49.39), second in the 100 (10.84) and second in the 200 (21.75).
The Tigers' Dylan Dempsey won the boys' high jump (6-4), and Burlington-Edison was second in the boys' 1,600 relay (3:25.47).
In girls' events, Burlington-Edison's Sydney Briggs was second in the 100 hurdles (14.86), Anacortes' Alexis Johnson second in the 300 hurdles (47.02), and Anacortes second in 1,600 relay (4:05.16)
Northwest 3A District Championships
SHORELINE - Four Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley athletes guaranteed themselves state meet berths on the second day of the 15-team meet.
The top four finishers in each event guaranteed themselves a spot in the state meet.
Mount Vernon's Charles Lederle placed third in the boys' 3,200 (9:25.89), Sedro-Woolley's Ethan DeJong second in the boys' 300 hurdles (39.98), Sedro-Woolley's Lyla Self third in the girls' 200 (25.42) and Mount Vernon's Mia Checketts third in girls' 3,200 (11:23.80).
In the relays, Sedro-Woolley was second in the boys' 1,600 (3:27.86) and fourth in the boys' 400 (43.57), and Sedro-Woolley was third in the girls' 400 (49.55).

Heritage Timberwolves 0
GIG HARBOR - The Bulldogs beat the Timberwolves in a Class 3A State Tournament match.
No. 12 seed Mount Vernon (16-2-1) will face No. 4 Gig Harbor (15-2-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday in a quarterfinal-round match at Roy Anderson Field in Gig Harbor.
Angel Reyes scored off an Elijah Natekin assist in the 25th minute to get the Bulldogs past the Timberwolves.
"From there, the Bulldogs defended their lead for the remaining 55 minutes against a determined Heritage side," Mount Vernon coach Behr Ibarra said.
Heritage went into the match undefeated.
Ibarra said Jake Robertson, Carlos Ramirez and Von Franulovich were strong along the Bulldogs' back line, and that goalie Lucas Melnik managed the match calmly.

LACEY - The Cubs beat the Vikings in a Class 3A State Tournament quarterfinal-round game.
The top-seeded Cubs (23-2) will face fourth-seeded Roosevelt at 10 a.m. Saturday in a semifinal-round game at Regional Athletic Complex.

LACEY - The Cubs beat the Stormrays in a Class 3A State Tournament game.
Burlington-Edison Tigers 3,
East Valley Red Devils 2
SELAH - The Tigers beat the Red Devils in a loser-out game of the Class 2A State Tournament.
Burlington-Edison went 2-1 on the tournament's first day.
The No. 8 seed Tigers (19-5) will face No. 15 Olympic at 10 a.m. Saturday in a tournament loser-out game.
The Tigers can finish as high as fourth place.

Boys' Tennis
Class 2A State Tournament
SEATTLE - The Anacortes doubles team of Colton Hong and Adam Van Egdom won twice to advance into the tournament semifinals.
Hong and Van Egdom won 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
"In the second match, second set, Colton and Adam held off three set points to advance," Anacortes coach Bryan Benson said. "That set probably took five years off my life because of the nervous moments and jaw-dropping winners from both sides ... but those are five years well-spent."
