Heat alert! Another hot day on tap for Western Washington on Thursday

Temperatures across Western Washington are expected to rise once again Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.

High temperatures are expected to reach into mid-80s and low 90s. There is a moderate heat risk for those who are sensitive to heat.

For the weekend, a gradual cooling trend will lead to a low heat risk. Temperatures are expected to be in the 70s and low 80s Saturday and Sunday, the Weather Service reported.

Washington experienced its hottest day of the year Monday. Seattle reached a high temperature of 94 degrees and Olympia of 98.

A Pierce County ban on outdoor burns was issued as a result of the rising temperatures. The county ban will last until further notice.

Even higher temperatures are expected on the West Slopes of the Cascades. Temperatures are expected to rise into the 90s in the mountain valleys. There is a moderate to high heat risk.

Like the lowlands, the temperature is expected to drop during the weekend, leading to a low heat risk.

Isolated thunderstorms also are possible across the West Slopes of the Cascades Thursday evening. That is a low probability but has the potential to cause fires, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Service says the homeless, elderly, children and people with health issues are most at risk in hot weather.

Some tips from the National Weather Service on how to stay cool for residents without air conditioning include: letting the cool night air in, keeping blinds closed, using fans, cooking outdoors and sleeping low to the ground.

The National Weather Service also advises everyone going swimming in open water to wear a life jacket and keep a close eye on children. Even though the air might be hot, the water is still cold.
