Live updates: High winds causes road closure, power outages in parts of Pierce County

High winds in Pierce County has caused road closures and power outages Thursday morning.

A wind advisory was issued throughout the Puget Sound and Hood Canal, with winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour, and gusts up to 50 miles per hour until 1 p.m, according to the National Weather Service.

In Tacoma, the winds are about 18 to 25 miles per hour, the NWS says. The forecast shows that Thursday night there will be mostly rain around 11 p.m. Winds could gust as high as 20 miles per hour.

At one point in the morning, Tacoma Public Utilities reported that around 1,700 residents were without power in the city. That number has significantly lowered to 37, the outage map shows.

About 117 residents have lost power in South Prairie, according to Puget Sound Energy’s outage map.

Road closure

Sunrise Beach Drive Northwest was closed from a slide blocking most of the roadway, Pierce County’s official X account posted at 7:52 a.m.

Crews mobilized to clean up the slide and anticipated the road reopening by the end of the day. As of Friday morning, the roadway has been fully cleared up.

Passes

I-90 eastbound Snoqualmie Pass closed at mile post 47 due to spinouts and crashes. As of 10:30 a.m. it has reopened. Snoqualmie and Stevens have had previous closures this morning.

Washington State Department of Transportation’s website is reporting the areas are experiencing compact snow and ice.

If you’re driving in that direction, don’t forget your chains, which are required for the passes.
