Why has “American Sniper” become such a rapturous, record-breaking movie – in spite of the relentless, ruthless opposition from the left wing and Michael Moore ilk?
“American Sniper” celebrates the heroism of American soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan (two of our nation’s most vilified wars) after being thrust into “immoral combat” by their political leaders – who simply did their utmost to protect each other and the innocent Iraqis, especially children, who were being massively tortured and beheaded by al-Qaida – which is also our enemy and can attack us anytime, at home, at random.
The movie shows (up close and personal) the terrible moral choices, and the mental and physical toll, that war inflicts on our soldiers and their families. Sniper Chris Kyle was an exceptional soldier and an imperfect man who fought bravely to maintain freedoms and security for others – even ungrateful detractors who bashed him as a coward.
I have an explanation. In other wars, our soldiers fought and died for “their country” – envisioned as “hills and plains, rivers and fields” – natural, not human, features. In Iraq and Afghanistan, they are fighting for our nation – persons, families and freedoms and helpless children being murdered. A difference!
Thank God, we have ordinary men and women who are willing to fight, and risk all, for others – rather than sit back, do nothing, but enjoy the freedoms and values for which brave and courageous soldiers, like “American Sniper,” fought and sacrificed for us.
