In every single city where a municipal telecommunications system like Click network exists there is a movement to privatize and eliminate that system.
The current proposal to privatize Click and lease it to a corporation like Wave Broadband isn’t due to lack of profits. It’s due to the millions of dollars Wave can make providing substandard service and eliminating the competition Click represents.
Before any recommendation or movement is made towards privatization, we need two things:
• An independent audit of Click’s finances so we can see what money is or isn’t being made. Currently, its declared finances are a mess that not even professionals seem to be able to make anything out of.
• A citizens’ stakeholder committee to study Click and make informed recommendations to the City Council. We need informed citizens to be an official part of this decision rather than just taking a poll worded to produce the desired results.
As Tacomans we should have the right to question the potential privatization of Click and to informed and unbiased answers to those questions.
