Re: "Merrival is fair, honest and ethical" (letter, 5-15).
When I pass from this world, there may be a few charitable folk who will speak in recollection of me, straining for some things to say that could ostensibly be construed as marks of endearment, such as "Remember how he never shined his shoes?" and "Remember how doorknobs always confused him?" And so on. But in any case, I will not be around to hear it.
So I must admit that in this regard, I feel rather envious of Steven Merrival. Consider how exceptional it would be to hear from all corners how respected, admired and well-liked you are while you still have the faculties to enjoy it.
And on information and belief, as we say in the trade, this is Merrival's present, well-merited and happy estate.
