Eugene Robinson is right about the global warming deniers in the Republican presidential field (column, 8-4). They are simply the current mouthpieces of a heavily funded campaign of deception that goes back decades.
The Union of Concerned Scientists has just published a report, “The Climate Deception Dossiers,” that is based upon documents gained through FOIA requests, lawsuits and leaks that demonstrate that the world’s leading fossil fuel companies have known for at least 20 years that green house gases produce global warming, but have continued to fund a disinformation campaign sowing doubt.
Everyone can read the UCS report for themselves online by going to www.ucsusa.org/decadesofdeception.
When the Olympic Peninsula rain forest catches fire, there is no escaping the fact that the climate is changing. Fourteen of the 15 hottest years on record have occurred since 2000, resulting in extreme weather patterns of both drought and storms.
Luckily for us, some folks in Washington get it. The president’s just announced Clean Power Plan sets carbon pollution standards for power plants, which are responsible for one-third of carbon pollution. We can, and must - for the sakes of our grandchildren - slow down global warming. It is past time that we face reality.
