EDUCATION: Legislators must comply with court order

The Washington Supreme Court did give the Legislature some leeway in its ruling Thursday on the McCleary v. Washington case. It issued daily $100,000 fines until the Legislature figures out the funding issue to pay for education.

The court could have ruled that a tax must be issued to pay for education. It might do that if the state does not do what the court ruled in its decision in McCleary, that the state must pay 100 percent of basic education as required by the state constitution.
