This month, Christians worldwide celebrate a special birth. In all corners of the world women are in labor and babies are being delivered. These are times of joy and hope for families.
However, that joy and hope is often dampened depending on where the child is born. Worldwide 6.3 million children die before reaching their fifth birthday. Nearly 300,000 women die from complications of pregnancy each year. Most of those deaths occur in poor countries, and most are preventable.
There is a new bipartisan bill, the Reach Every Mother and Child Act, that is sponsored by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Chris Coons, D-Delaware, that aims to build the foundations for ending the senseless deaths of young children and mothers within one generation.
This bill calls for a coordinated strategy to end preventable child and maternal deaths and sets clear targets for reaching the poorest people with effective, evidence-based interventions.
No matter where they are born, women and children deserve to thrive. I’m grateful that Sen. Patty Murray has signed onto this bill. Please join me in urging Sen. Maria Cantwell to also co-sign this bill.
