Michael Franti, “The Voice” contestants to perform at Obliteride bicycle event to raise money for cancer research

Michael Franti & Spearhead are scheduled to perform Aug. 8 at Obliteride, a bike ride raising money for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Franti and the band performed last year at the inaugural ride. All registered riders will receive two complimentary tickets to the concert. The ride is Aug. 9-10.

The concert is in Gas Works Park.

“I’m proud to be playing at the Obliteride party,” Franti said in a statement issued by ride organizers. “It was an incredible night last year and I really enjoyed performing for people so committed to making the world a better place by helping end cancer.”

Also performing will be Olympia native Ethan Tucker.

The two-day ride includes an overnight stay at the University of Puget Sound on Aug. 9 where Canadian folk-rock band The Paperboys will perform.

At the finish line party on Aug. 10, three local participants – Vicci Martinez and Stephanie Anne Johnson of Tacoma and Austin Jenckes of Duvall- on the NBC show “The Voice” will perform.

The bike rides offers distances of 25, 50, 100 and 150 miles. Participants must raise $1,000-1,975 depending on the distance they choose to ride. They must also pay a registration fee of $100-150. Ride organizers say 100 percent of money raised goes to cancer research.
