Blackhawk helicopter finds no sign of missing Rainier hiker

A Blackhawk helicopter was used overnight Wednesday to search for signs of a missing Tacoma hiker on the east side of Mount Rainier.

The search was unsuccessful and crews were back in the field Thursday looking for Edwin Birch, 64, according to a statement released by the park. The statement said the search will be scaled back Friday.

The Customs and Border Patrol Blackhawk from the Bellingham Marine Division was looking for light sources in the search area.

Thursday’s search focused on the Frying Pan Creek Drainage Basin, the steep headwaters of the Ohanapecosh River and the Indian Bar area. Birch was hiking alone on the Wonderland Trail on July 12 when he went missing.
