Cyclists raise $1.5 million for cancer research

The numbers are in from the Obliteride cancer research fundraising bicycle ride that rolled through Tacoma over the weekend.

Organizers say the 913 riders combined to raise $1.5 million for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Organizers hope that number will double by the time fundraising ends Sept. 30.

In its second year, Obliteride offers rides of 25, 50, 100, and 150 miles and requires riders to raise $1,000-1,975 depending on the distance they choose. Ride director Mark Grantor says 100 percent of money raised goes to cancer research.

The 2013 ride raised $1.9 million.

The next Obliteride is scheduled for Aug. 7-9, 2015.
