Join special volksmarch at 10:11 a.m. on 12-13-14

Three South Sound volkssport clubs are co-hosting a walk to celebrate the numerical confluence occurring at 10:11 a.m. on 12-13-14.

The rare sequential time and date pattern will occur Saturday morning. A similar pattern will not occur again until the year 2067, according to Bob Morrison of the Capitol Volkssport Club in Olympia.

Also hosting the event are the Evergreen Wanderers in Tacoma and Daffodil Valley Volkssport in Puyallup.

The event is a guided group 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) walk beginning at 9:30 a.m., so all walkers are on the trail at 10:11 on 12-13-14. The walk take place at Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood and will include walking on asphalt, gravel and dirt trails in the park, around a lake, passing a few remaining houses of the original Fort Steilacoom and through surrounding neighborhoods.

The South Sound walk will be one of 70 such walks taking place in 39 states, all sponsored by local chapters of the American Volkssport Association.

All walkers must register, carry and return an official start card. Those walking for American Volkssport Association lifetime achievement credit pay $3 while noncredit participants are welcome to walk for free.

Volkssports, which started in Germany, are personal fitness and recreation programs offering noncompetitive walks, hikes, bike rides, swims, and in some places, cross-country skiing.
