NORTHWEST MULTISPORT TRAIL DUATHLON
WHAT: Registration is open for next month’s Northwest Multisport Trail Duathlon, a running and biking race open to athletes of all experience levels. Participants use a mountain bike or cyclocross bike, and enter a race on one of two courses. The short course is a 3.1-mile run followed by a 5.3-mile bike ride. The long course has a 15.9-mile bike ride sandwiched between two 3.1-mile runs. The running route is flat with the exception of one 150-foot climb, while the biking loop has rolling hills with some short steep climbs. Two-person teams (a runner and cyclist) are welcome.
WHEN: 9 a.m. Feb. 8.
WHERE: Fort Steilacoom Park, 8700 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Lakewood.
GETTING THERE: From South Tacoma Way in Lakewood take Steilacoom Boulevard west to Fort Steilacoom Park. Turn left on 87th Ave. SW, then right on Dresden Lane.
COST: $40 ($49 day of race) for individuals and $60 ($71) for teams on the short course. $45 ($55) for individuals and $70 ($82) for teams on the long course.
ALSO: Participants check-in starts at 7:30 a.m. and the pre-race meeting is at 8:50 a.m. Look out for others. The trails are open to other users during the event. The first two races in what was to be a three-race series at Fort Steilacoom Park have been cancelled. They were set for Sunday (Jan. 4) and Jan. 25.
Videos and maps of the course are posted on the event website. The website also offers a link to a Facebook page where you can post or respond to messages looking for a teammate. Organizers advise racers to prepare for cold. Weather will not cause cancellation of the event unless the course becomes unsafe.
