Kids honing their skills, young athletes in their prime, over-the-hill runners with sketchy joints and people of all ages simply looking to try something new have several opportunities to participate in track and field this spring and summer.
Two South Sound all-comers track series offer a combined nine track meets over the next two months.
Already underway is a series at Tumwater High. The school’s track hosts meets June 11, 18 and 25. The meets start at 6 p.m.
Entry fee is $5 and includes up to four events. An entire family (immediate members only) can participate for $10. These meets include opportunities try javelin and pole vault. Other field events include long jump, shot put, triple jump and discuss.
An array of sprint and hurdle races are available including a 50-meter dash for kids 8 and younger. The distance run changes each week. It will be 3,000 meters on June 11, 5,000 meters on June 18 and 3,200 meters on June 25.

Puyallup’s Spark Stadium will be the site of meets at 5 p.m. June 24, July 1, 8, 22, 29 and Aug. 5. The entry fee is $10 per meet or $50 for the season. There’s no pole vault or javelin here, but events include races from 50 to 3,200 meters, softball throw, shot put, discus, long jump and high jump.
The top six finishers in each division win ribbons. Teams can compete against each other but must pay a tracking fee ($10 for teams of 39 or less, $20 for teams of 40 or more) to be included in the standings. For more information visit co.pierce.wa.us.
