Salmon meeting location changed

Tuesday’s meeting at which 2016 salmon forecasts will be released has been moved to the General Administration Building in Olympia.

The meeting, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., will be held in the auditorium of the building at 210 11th St. SW. It had originally been scheduled to be held in the nearby Natural Resources Building. Parking is available at the Natural Resources Building, just a short walk from the new location.

At the meeting, staff from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife will release the initial salmon forecasts for runs in Puget Sound and Columbia River, and salmon abundance in the Pacific Ocean.

The meeting is part of the process that will conclude in April with the setting of salmon fishing seasons and regulations. You can learn more at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/northfalcon.

Walk, run the 2016 Foothills Dash

The seventh annual Foothills Dash will take place Saturday, with a 5k and 10k run/walk, plus a 1-mile run for children 12 and younger.

The Pierce County Parks and Recreation event will include competitively timed races, and ribbons are awarded to the top finishers in each age bracket. The 5K and 10K courses are U.S.A. Track and Field-certified.

The event will start at 9 a.m. at the Orting Eagles Lodge parking lot, 112 Bridge St., Orting. Check-in and registration begins at 7 a.m.

Registration is $30. Youth fees are $5 for 1 mile and $10 for the 5K and 10K walk/runs. T‐shirts are available for an additional $15, or $5 for the youth 1-mile run, while supplies last.

Gifford Pinchot moves visitor services

As of Tuesday, Gifford Pinchot National Forest visitor services in Vancouver, Washington, will be located at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site visitor center. The visitor center is located at 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd.

The current forest headquarters at 10600 NE 51st Circle will be closed to the public.

By partnering with the National Park Service, the the national forest’s staff will be able to reach more visitors and provide enhanced customer service through extended hours: from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturdays.

Visitors stopping at the center will be able to plan trips to the forest, purchase federal recreation passes and explore the national park.

The visitor center was remodeled last year and reopened in November.

Later this year, the entire forest headquarters office will relocate to one of the park’s historic infantry barracks buildings. The renovation of the 1906 building is expected to be completed in the fall.
