Early August will be the opportunity for South Sound anglers to cash in if they land a large salmon.

There will be two salmon derbies taking place in the waters off Tacoma and Olympia, each offering a $3,500 first-place prize. The South King County chapter of Puget Sound Anglers will hold its derby Aug. 6, while the Gig Harbor chapter will hold its derby Aug. 13.

In addition to offering cash and prizes, the derbies generate important revenue for the organizing clubs.

“This is our main fundraising event and supports our efforts to improve fisheries resources in the Pacific Northwest,” South King County chapter derby co-chairman Bill Lee said in a prepared statement. “Proceeds from the derby benefit fisheries conservation and youth conservation education programs.”

Because both derbies are part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series, each paid ticket holder will be entered for a chance to win a fully outfitted 21-foot Hewscraft boat, valued at $65,000.

A big change in the derby lineup is cancellation of the event held by the South Sound Puget Sound Anglers. Club officials said they opted to discontinue the event, citing the lack of salmon in the South Sound. In the past two years, there were just 52 salmon brought in to be weighed. Chapter officials said the low income generated by the event wasn’t enough to justify to the amount of time volunteers worked putting together the derby.

Here is a look at each of the derbies:
