Tracking local golfers on the PGA Tour (July 5, 2014)

This week: The Greenbrier Classic, Thursday through Sunday, The Old White TPC, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

In the field: Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley, University Place’s Michael Putnam and Tacoma’s Troy Kelly.

Third-round scores: Stanley shot a 4-under-par 66, and Putnam had a 3-under 67.

Positions: Stanley (5-under 205) is tied for 19th, and Putnam (4-under 206) is tied for 30th — both trailing leader Billy Hurley III (12-under 198). Kelly (4-over 144) missed the cut Friday.

Recap: Maybe Stanley is starting to find something with the longer putter he recently began using. Four of his seven birdies came on putts of 10 feet or longer, including a 30-footer on the 17th hole. Of course, his wedge play was sensational Saturday, setting up many short birdie chances. It was a good time to go low — the Bellarmine Prep product was playing with tournament host Tom Watson. … Putnam moved up 19 spots on the leaderboard with four birdies and only one bogey. Three of his birdies came on putts of 5 feet or shorter, including one at the par-3 18th hole. He hit a pitching wedge just left of the front-left pin location and made the 4-foot putt.

Tee times Sunday: Putnam at 8:25 a.m. (PDT) and Stanley at 9:25 a.m.
