Tracking local golfers on the PGA Tour: July 31, 2014

This week: WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Firestone Country Club South Course, Akron, Ohio.

In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore.

First-round score: 5-under-par 65.

Position: Moore is tied for second, one stroke behind Marc Leishman (64).

Recap: Moore tied South African Charl Schwartzel and England’s Justin Rose for the day’s second-best score. The Cascade Christian graduate went bogey-free, making birdies on four of his final nine holes (Nos. 2, 5, 6 and 8). His scoring explosion, which came on the more difficult front nine at Firestone, included chip-in birdies at the fifth hole (35-footer) and eighth hole (16-footer out of right rough). Even though it was his best round at Firestone, Moore isn’t a stranger to good starts on this layout. He opened with 66 in each of his past two appearances (2013, 2011).

Tee time Friday: 10:10 a.m. (PDT) off the first tee.

This week: Barracuda Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Montreux Golf and Country Club, Reno, Nevada

In the field: University Place’s Michael Putnam and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley.

First-round scores: Putnam had a plus-8 in modified Stableford scoring, and Stanley had a plus-5.

Positions: Putnam is tied for 36th, and Stanley is tied for 68th — both trailing leader Nick Watney (plus-18)

Recap: This format rewards birdies and eagles. Four of the five birdies for Putnam were on putts of 5 feet or shorter, with three of them coming on the par-5 holes. … Stanley made a 5-foot birdie putt on the first hole. Three holes later, he almost knocked in a wedge approach shot for an eagle 2. And that was about it as he made 12 pars the rest of the way.

Tee times Friday: Putnam at 12:11 p.m. (PDT), and Stanley at 12:44 p.m. Both go off the 10th tee.
