Tracking local golfers on the PGA Tour: Aug. 2, 2014

This week: WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Firestone Country Club South Course, Akron, Ohio.

In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore.

Third-round score: 2-under-par 68.

Position: Moore (4-under 206) is tied for 10th, nine strokes behind leader Sergio Garcia (14-under 196).

Recap: With news that Dustin Johnson will be out of golf for the rest of 2014 for personal reasons, therefore vacating a potential spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, this is a golden opportunity for Moore to improve his standing. If he can post a top-10 or even top-five finish, he will be right on the cusp of making the squad. Moore birdied No. 1 (20-foot putt) and No. 2 (30-foot chip to within inches of the cup at the par-5 hole) right out of the gate. Then he traded birdies with bogeys. His last bogey came at the 17th hole (laid up out of a fairway bunker), but he hit a 340-yard drive on the final hole, setting up a wedge approach shot that stopped 4 feet away from the cup and led to a final birdie.

Tee time Sunday: 10:15 a.m. (PDT) off the first tee.

This week: Barracuda Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Montreux Golf and Country Club, Reno, Nevada.

In the field: Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley and University Place’s Michael Putnam.

Third-round scores: Putnam fired a plus-16 in modified Stableford scoring, and Stanley had a plus-6.

Positions: Putnam (plus-27) is in eighth place, and Stanley (plus-22) is tied for 25th — both trailing leader Geoff Ogilvy (plus-35).

Recap: Putnam made a big move with seven birdies and an eagle. He made five birdies in six holes on the front nine, capped by one at No. 9 (13-foot putt). Then he made eagle at the par-5 13th hole, ripping a 5-iron approach shot 210 yards to just left of the hole and rolling in a 7-foot putt. … Stanley was in the top 15 until he stumbled with three bogeys over his final five holes. Two of them came when he missed par-saving putts of 6 feet or shorter.

Tee times Sunday: Stanley at 8:40 a.m. (PDT), and Putnam at 9:40 a.m. Both go off the first tee.
