This week: Shell Houston Open, Thursday through Sunday, Golf Club of Houston, Humble, Texas.
In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore and University Place’s Michael and Andrew Putnam.
World rankings: Moore is 27th, Michael Putnam is 254th, and Andrew Putnam is 333rd.
2014-15 earnings: Moore has $1.96 million (eighth on the PGA Tour), Michael Putnam has $309,538 (123rd on the PGA Tour), and Andrew Putnam has $207,482 (154th on the PGA Tour).
The skinny: Moore is well on his way to the best season of his career. Last season, he made a career-high $3.1 million and had a career-best seven top-10 finishes, including a victory in Malaysia, in 24 PGA starts. He is on pace to shatter those career highs through nine events, with a repeat win at the CIMB Classic and three top-10s, including a fifth-place showing at the Valspar Championship (8-under 266). Moore has never played the week before the Masters but chose to do so this week. His last appearance at this tournament was in 2012, when he placed 88th. He tied for 11th at the event three years before that. … The Putnam brothers had a Sunday in San Antonio they would soon like to forget. Andrew Putnam shot a 79 to tie for 72nd (16-over 204), and Michael Putnam shot an 83 to finish 75th (18-over 306) at last week’s Valero Texas Open. Michael, the older Putnam, played at the Houston Open last season, tying for 24th (4-under 284). This is the last chance for a non-qualified golfer to get into next week’s Masters with a victory.
Tee times Thursday: Michael Putnam at 5:30 a.m. (PDT) off the 10th tee, Andrew Putnam at 7 a.m. off the first tee and Moore at 10:40 a.m. off the 10th tee.
