This week: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, Thursday through Sunday, Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas.
First-round scores: Olympia’s Andres Gonzales shot a 2-under-par 68, and University Place’s Michael Putnam had a 2-over 72.
Positions: Gonzales is tied for 25th, and Putnam is tied for 87th, trailing co-leaders Ryo Ishikawa, Kevin Na, Jordan Spieth and Boo Weekley (64).
Recap: Much of the good scoring came in the afternoon wave, and Gonzales was part of that. The Capital High School graduate’s short game was spot-on (26 putts, a string of up-and-downs for par on final nine holes). Gonzales finished his day by hitting a 9-iron approach shot just past the 18th hole and sinking a 6-foot putt for birdie. … Putnam birdied the first hole, hitting a wedge from 80 yards close enough for a short putt, but he never got anything going after that. Again, his putter was cold. He three-putted on No. 13 for bogey, and two holes later, he made a final bogey when he did not get up-and-down from 70 feet from the right apron.
Tee times Friday: Gonzales at 6:06 a.m. (PDT) off the first tee and Putnam at 11:18 a.m. off the 10th tee.
