This week: FedEx St. Jude Classic, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Southwind, Memphis, Tennessee.
In the field: University Place’s Andrew Putnam and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley.
First-round scores: Stanley fired a 1-under-par 69, and Putnam shot a 4-over 74.
Positions: Stanley is tied for 32nd, and Putnam is tied for 123rd — both trailing co-leaders Brooks Koepka, Greg Owen and Ryan Palmer (64).
Recap: Stanley did not drive the ball very accurately (hit six of 14 fairways) and did not find the green in regulation all that often (10 of 18 greens), but he did something well that he had not in a while —make putts. It took 25 putts to complete his round. His last birdie came at the sixth hole (10-foot putt) to reach 2 under, but he gave a shot back at No. 8 from off the green. … Well, there is a pretty good chance Putnam will get back to University Place early to root on his brother, Michael, at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. Andrew had three birdies, but he had a triple bogey at No. 12, where his drive sailed so far left that he had to take a penalty stroke — then three-putted from 30 feet.
Tee times Friday: Putnam at 6:40 a.m. (PST) off the 10th tee and Stanley at 10 a.m. off the first tee.
