Lacey’s Casey Adams captures Tacoma city golf crown

These days, Lacey’s Casey Adams is collecting city golf championships like a philatelist saves old postage stamps.

He added an important title to his stash Sunday: the 85th Tacoma City Amateur.

The River Ridge High School graduate reeled in defending champion and overnight leader Sean Packer with a 4-under-par 68 at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club in Federal Way.

Adams rolled in an 18-foot putt for birdie on the 18th green to close the door on Packer, and win by two shots.

Adams’ 68 gave him a three-round total of 5-under 210, just ahead of Bonney Lake’s Packer (212), who shot a 72. Enumclaw’s Tyler Salsbury shot a 72 as well to finish third at 213.

Adams, who earlier this summer won the Bremerton City Amateur and Capitol City Amateur, continued his stretch of hot play.

“It’s just been more of a maturity thing,” said Adams, 25. “I’ve been able to play consistent golf, and stay in things mentally.”

Adams got a couple of good breaks on par-5 holes — No. 6 and No. 12. He hit drives that were heading out of bounds right, only to get good bounces and stay in play.

He birdied both of the holes.

“Casey played awesome,” Packer said. “There were a couple moments … where he was short of greens with steep uphill chip shots. I thought those were the times he might give us a bogey … but he was really solid. It was the exact, boring golf you have to play.”

Adams was cruising until he hit a 4-iron tee shot at No. 17 into a water hazard right of the green, and made a double bogey.

But with Packer looking over a possible birdie putt to tie at the final hole, Adams did not allow that scenario to happen. He rolled in his birdie putt before Packer.

“That felt amazing,” Adams said. “It was right in the middle.”

CHIP SHOTS

Sunday’s best round was posted by two-time Tacoma City Amateur champion David Talcott. He shot a 67 — with an eagle, four birdies and one bogey — to tie for eighth. … Recent Decatur High School graduate Spencer Clapp shot a 71 to finish alone in fourth at 214. He is headed to NCAA Division II Sonoma State in California next week. … Ryan Welborn (75), co-owner of Foley’s on the Green restaurant at Meadow Park, was fifth at 218.
