The college-career-ending foot injury suffered by Isaiah Stanback is a terrible piece of news for Stanback, who is a good guy and a good player.
It also comes at a terrible time for his dreams of playing in the NFL.
However, it need not necessarily derail the Huskies' season. Tyrone Willingham's stated goal of a bowl victory remains possible. And if it seems more ambitious than it did a couple of weeks ago, it also seems more realistic than it did a couple of months ago.
Largely due to Stanback's efforts, the Huskies now stand two victories away from bowl eligibility. If the Huskies remain the focused and confident team they have appeared for most of this season, they should still be solid favorites to beat Stanford at Husky Stadium.
That means that to punch their bowl ticket they must find one more win amid Cal or Arizona State or Oregon or Washington State.
That seems reasonable. If Carl Bonnell can look like the quarterback the coaches have been telling us about, that seems do-able. If Carl Bonnell looks anything like he did at Oklahoma, that seems probable.
If it helps, the Huskies should do it for Isaiah.
But there's no reason to think they can't do it.
