I'm in the Pac-10's newest basketball arena, and initial impressions are pretty good.
From the outside, the place is mostly just a big brick box. But the inside is very cool: dark red seats all around – all padded, all theater-type seats, even in what will eventually be the student section. (I'm not sure where that is yet, because it's still early enough where the doors apparently haven't opened to the general public.
The big architectural flourish is in what must be the north end zone: which has one level of seating and above that is a glass wall that gives a look out to downtown LA. That's pretty impressive at night, and it must be dazzling in daytime.
The only obvious downside to the place is the upper deck, whcich wraps around three sides of the court (everything but the picture window). It seems pretty high up there, especially the upper rows. Even though the place seats only about 200 more than Hec Ed, it doesn't seems much more expansive. We'll see how that affects the noise once -- if? -- some fans show up.
