UW wing Phil Nelson has decided to leave school after one season, probably moving to Portland State.
One of the four members of UW's heralded 2006-07 freshman class, Nelson had averaged 20.8 points per game at McNary H.S. in Keizer, Oregon. In his first college season he played in 31 games and started nine, averaging 4.7 points and 2 rebounds.
"Sometimes guys get impatient," coach Lorenzo Romar said. "He was in a situation where our talent level at that position was pretty good. He competed. He started nine games for us. He didn't say, "I didn't get to play,' because he got to play. … (But) if you look at any school that has some sort of success, as your talent pool increases, I think you start to see transfers happen."
Bottom line, the Huskies would have been happy to have Nelson return, but they also feel comfortable that they'll land on their feet without him, especially with Joel Smith and Tim Morris and the new recruits coming in.
