UW freshman Jake Locker is at the top of the football depth chart, coach Tyrone Willingham said today.
Willingham said that senior Carl Bonnell isn't yet at full health, but that even if he was, that Locker would be the starting quarterback if the season started today.
This kind of early prioritizing of his QB depth chart is very unusual for Willingham.
"I'm very comfortable – as you guys know – with not making a decision on a quarterback until game week," he said. "But at the same time, you'd like to have all the positions answered as soon as possible as long as there is a good healthy competition. I would be probably leaning toward Jake right now … (because of) his knack for doing things, his understanding of how the games is played, how to execute certain things."
We didn't get to talk to Locker today, because he had a class that conflicted with the press event. However, Bonnell was there and was understanding about his place on the depth chart, while still promising to compete for the starting job.
Otherwise, not much real breaking news from today's press conference, which served as a preview for spring practices, which begin Monday.
I'll have a lot more in the Friday paper.
