Holiday Bowl: Scouting Nebraska . . . at quarterback

Editor's note: Periodically from now until the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30th, we will break down Nebraska, position by position, as the two teams head for its collision-course rematch in San Diego.

** Starter: Taylor Martinez.

** Top reserves: Cody Green and Zac Lee.

** Key statistics in 2010: Martinez passed for 1,578 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions, and rushed for 942 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had five 100-yard rushing games, including 241 against Kansas State. … Green started two late-season games (295 yards, three TDs). … Lee had a fumble in the earlier game against the UW.

** Scouting report: At the end of September, especially after how badly the Huskies got torched, Martinez was being mentioned as a darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate, even as a first-year starting quarterback and redshirt freshmen. But the week after his 241-yard rushing game against the Wildcats, a school record for a Nebraska quarterback, he hurt his ankle late in the first half against Missouri, which has slowed him down considerably. The California product is much less effective as a dropback passer.

** Quoteworthy: "Our gap integrity is going to be critical. … A couple of the plays when (Martinez) got out on us last time, we weren’t assignment-sound. We lost assignments, and he created big plays for them." – UW coach Steve Sarkisian.
