Huskies look to salvage year in postseason

With a disappointing 20-10 regular season now behind them, the Huskies will return to action at 8:30 p.m. Thursday In the Pac-10 tournament at Staples Center in Los Angeles against Washington State – the only team to sweep them during the Pac-10 regular season.

WSU beat UW 87-80 in Pullman in late January and 80-69 in Seattle in late February. However, UW coach Lorenzo Romar believes the Cougars pose no particular matchup problem.

“They know us well, we know them well,” Romar said. “Whoever you play against, you’ve got to play the game. … They’re good. They’ve outplayed us twice. I don’t know if that means they’re a bad matchup.”

Here's more of what the Huskies had to say tonight as they looked ahead to the Pac-10 tournament and -- they hope -- the NCAA tournament:

ISIAH THOMASOn playing the Cougars for the third time this year in the Pac10 tournament) Yeah, we’ll try to get them back. It’s hard to beat a team three times in any sport so, we’re focusing and getting ready for them and hopefully we will have a good game.

On moving forward) We’ve just got to turn the page and really be ready. It’s the Pac-10 tournament. We’ve got to try to make some noise and, like I said, it’s do-or-die. If you don’t bring it, you’re out.

On knowing how to win in loser-out situations) Yeah, we do. We have guys who have been in this situation. Everybody just has to be ready, play their part and be ready and do really well. It’s March. There’s no more excuses. Everybody has to be held accountable for what they’re doing, me included. We just really have to be ready and be focused. It’s one game at a time and we just have to try to make some noise.

Looking ahead to Selection Sunday) “The last two years I’ve been here we’ve had parties,” Thomas said. “We’ve had everybody here celebrating because we knew we were going to be in the NCAA tournament. I want that feeling again. Who doesn’t?”

SCOTT SUGGS)On UCLA securing the second place conference spot with a win today) Obviously, we wanted to get as high as possible. We’ve got Washington State again, and I’m sure they’re excited to get us too.

VENOY OVERTONOn what Washington is going to focus on going into the Pac-10 Tournament) We’ve got Washington State—they’ve beat us twice already so we’ve gotta be ready to play against a zone. The zone has been getting us you could say. We’ve gotta get in the gym and everybody’s gotta get to shooting and we’ve gotta be ready. It’s the big stage, and I think we’ll play good on the big stage.
