Know your enemy: Some morning reading on the Utes

The Utes are 8-0 after bye weeks and 6-0 after bye weeks under current coach Kyle Whittingham. Their last home loss after a bye week was 15 years ago. And yes they are coming off a bye week before UW.

But... look at this table

Something a little different about those teams Utah was playing - talent level

Two that got away: Utah recruited Keith Price, who committed to UW, but then  opened up his recruiting when Tyrone Willingham was fired.

Price visited Oregon and was supposed to visit Utah, but the Utes stopped recruiting him when Jordan Wynn de-committed from Colorado and committed to the Utes.

Asked about Utah’s recruiting of Price, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said Tuesday he can’t remember the exact circumstances of why the Utes passed on Price, but admitted the sophomore is a talent.

"We knew he was a good player and he has proven it with what he has done up there," Whittingham said.Utah could have had Cort Dennison - he grew up going to Utes game and went to high school about a block away from the stadium, but the only offered him a preferred walk-on spot, not a scholarship.

Whittingham didn’t elaborate too much on why the Utes didn’t make an offer to Dennison, saying only the Utes did know of him. "He’s doing a nice job," Whittingham said.
Columnist Steve Kragthorpe writes about Steve Sarkisian returning to Rice-Eccles stadium

and the last time Sark was there as a player for BYU.

Long before they would meet Saturday as head coaches at Rice-Eccles Stadium, Whittingham was Utah’s defensive coordinator, dealing with BYU offenses quarterbacked by Sarkisian. In one memorable episode, that meant standing helplessly on the sideline, watching Sarkisian repeatedly hand off.

“They ran the ball down our throat pretty good,” Whittingham said this week.Sarkisian recalled the game - he was only 7 of 17 for 70 yards.

"No. I was awful, quite honestly. I threw four picks my junior year, three in the first half. They beat us. My senior year I think we only threw 12 passes. It was snowing. We rushed for 400 yards or something like that but we were able to win the game."
