For tomorrow's newspaper, we took a look inside the losses contained within Washington's losing streaks of three or more games in the Steve Sarkisian era.
As has been written and lamented by Huskies fans repeatedly in the aftermath of Saturday's loss at Arizona State, UW has lost three or more consecutive games in each of Sarkisian's five seasons as UW coach -- and such streaks have actually inhabited each Huskies season since (and including) 2004, meaning they have happened now for 10 consecutive seasons.
But since Sarkisian spoke at some length about this topic on Monday, we explored in our story the numbers behind some of those losses.
Here's what he said on Monday:
"Somewhere in here, this piece of the season, this portion of the season, granted we’ve played good teams, this portion of the season here has caused us issues for five consecutive years. And so when we hit the offseason, I keep a running log of notes and things so that when January comes around, as a staff there are things we need to address of things that came up throughout the season, and this is definitely going to be one of them.
"This isn’t going to go away. We’re going to play Stanford and Oregon every year. If we have to play them back to back every year, so be it. It’s that next game after those hard-fought, emotional battles, how we deal with it. Obviously we haven’t dealt with them well enough yet up to this point, so back to the drawing board. Those talks have to take place in January and have to get worked through in January. We can’t wait until the week of the ballgame."
And here's what he's referring to:
Oct. 17, at Arizona State, L, 24-17
Oct. 24, vs. Oregon, L, 43-19
Nov. 7 at UCLA, L, 24-23
Nov. 14 at Oregon State, L, 48-21
Oct. 23, at Arizona, L, 44-14
Oct. 30 vs. Stanford, L, 41-0
Nov. 6, at Oregon, L, 53-16
Nov. 5, vs. Oregon, L, 34-17
Nov. 12, at USC, L, 40-17
Nov. 19, at Oregon State, L, 48-21
Oct. 6, at Oregon, L, 52-21
Oct. 13, vs. USC, L, 24-14
Oct. 20, at Arizona, L, 52-17
Oct. 5, at Stanford, L, 31-28
Oct. 12, vs. Oregon, L, 45-24
Oct 19, at Arizona State, L, 53-24
A couple notes ...
--- Washington's average margin of defeat in these games is just a little more than 23 points. The Huskies have allowed 40 or more points 10 times during these losing streaks, and have not scored more than 28 points in any of the losses.
--- Each of these losing streaks has included a loss to Oregon. Two of the losses were to Stanford, along with two each to Arizona State, Arizona, USC and Oregon State.
--- Speaking of Stanford, the Huskies have played the Cardinal and Ducks in back-to-back weeks in three of Sarkisian's five seasons as coach. So last year's 3-game losing streak was preceded by UW's win over Stanford at CenturyLink Field.
--- UW was within one score of winning just three of these games -- this season against Stanford, and in 2009 at ASU and UCLA.
--- It should also be noted, of course, that because we're only analyzing losses, the numbers are going to be a little skewed toward the negative.
