Huskies coach Chris Petersen said Monday that freshman cornerback Austin Joyner will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained on the opening kickoff of Washington’s 49-0 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday.
Joyner, who starred as a defensive back and running back at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, was one of eight true freshmen to play in UW’s season opener at Boise State. After sprinting down the field to help cover the opening kickoff against Sac State, Joyner collided with a blocker, went down, then limped to the sideline before heading to the locker room.
Petersen said he expects Joyner will be granted a redshirt for this season, because the injury occurred in only the second game of the year. Such cases almost always result in a redshirt being granted.
