UConn wins game of tournament ... so far

Of course, UW-Kentucky is just minutes away.

The UW-Kentucky winner will face UConn tomorrow at 7 p.m. PST for the Maui title (ESPN). The loser will meet MSU at 2 p.m. (ESPN2).

Halfway through Game 3: Connectcuit coach Jim Calhoun began this tournament with a little tweak that Michigan State is one of the best teams he's seen over the last 10-20 years and that everybody else in Maui is playing for second place. Hmm. Here we are at halftime and UConn and MSU are ever at 34.

Two down, two to go:The tournament is at its halfway point. Virginia bounced back today, leading pretty much wire to wire in what ended as a 74-56 win over Oklahoma.

The Cavs move on to the 5th-6th place game with Wichita State at 4:30 Wednesday. The Sooners tumble to the 7th-8th place game with Chaminade at 11:30 a.m.

Next up today: UConn and Michigan State at 4 p.m. Pacific on ESPN.

Game 2: Virginia -- who looked so bad last night against UW -- is just mashing Oklahoma, 40-25 at half. Could be encouraging for, considering Kentucky didn't exactly blow out the Sooners. Or could mean nothing, of course. We'll find out in a few hours.

WSU wins, Game 2 next: Wichita State has just opened the day with a 79-58 win over host Chaminade.

Oddly enough -- or maybe not -- there were considerably more Wichita fans in the gym.

Also, the Shockers are just striking me of one of those teams that could really come together nicely and show up in the NCAA tournament -- maybe even advancing a bit -- come March. One of the fun things about these holiday tournaments.

Game II: Oklahoma-Virginia at 1:30 on ESPN2.

Aloha: The second day of the Maui Invitational has tipped off with Wichita State jumping to the expected early lead on Chaminade (ESPN2).

After this, it's Oklahoma and Virginia at 1:30 p.m. (ESPN2), UConn and MSU at 4 p.m. (ESPN), and the biggie: Washington-Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. (ESPN).

I plan the same format as yesterday: One running blog over the first three games, then a separate all-Huskies blog for the nightcap.
