Huskies rally late to kick Ducks, 87-69

It took a good long while, but the Huskies finally pulled away from stubborn Oreon ... and then they poured it on for what ended as an 87-69 win.

UW moves to 3-0 in conference, Oregon drops to 0-3.

Terrence Ross led all scorers with a career-high 25 points. Isaiah Thomas rallied late for 20 points, including a breakaway dunk in the final two minutes, which he followed with a raise-the-roof sign to the crowd.

UW had 19 assists and 12 turnovers in their first game without starting point guard Abdul Gaddy.

Joevan Catron was the best I've ever seen him for Oregon: 20 points, 10 rebounds.

Here's a pretty wide-ranging opening statement by UW coach Lorenzo Romar:

When I was an assistant at UCLA we played the Washington Huskies and that year they won five games – that was Bob Bender’s first year. I remember even thought they won five games looking at that team and saying they are headed in the right direction, they have a plan, they are going to be much better. And they ended up being much better. And I say the same thing about Oregon. I think that they did an outstanding job tonight. This is not going to be an Oregon team that’s going to go through the Pac-10 and end up 1-17. I think they’re going to beat some people. They’ve got shooters. They’ve got Catron (Joevan) who we just had a tough time tonight. They’re going to do fine. …

With that being said, once our guys woke up – they kind of lulled us to sleep with that three-quarters court pickup; they weren’t doing it necessarily to steal the basketball, but just to slow us up a little bit – it made us stagnant. Once we figured that out we were better offensively. But early we settled too much for the three. Sometimes we shot the ball so quickly we couldn’t rebound the basketball. They didn’t have to guard us at all; they were so fresh coming down to play offense. In the second half we did a much better job. The zone helped us. It forced them to shoot outside. They missed and we were able to get out on transition.

Terrence Ross obviously had a phenomenal basketball game. Isaiah Thomas: nine assists, five turnovers – I thought he did a very nice job. And we out-rebounded someone. So we’re pleased and ready to go up against a different and more athletic Oregon State team than we’ve seen since we’ve been here.

UW returns to action a 3:30 Saturday vs. Oregon State.

2nd/3:48 Looks like the Huskies finally have put it away, leading 75-59 with less than four minutes left. Isaiah Thomas ally-oop to Terrence Ross seemed to seal it. Ross has 21 points, Suggs 13, MBA 13, Thomas 12.

Catron had 20 and nine rebounds, and he carried the Ducks for a long while.

2nd/7:39 UW, 64-57.

2nd/10:56: Huskies put together a little run to move ahead, 60-53. Crowd into it, with Dawg Pack doing their best to help.

2nd/15:00 UW 48-47. Ducks playing with confidence. UW has only one free throw attempted so far ... and missed it. Ducks 5-of-9 from the foul line.

Second half: ... has begun. Joevan Catron opens with a three. UW up only, 41-40.

Halftime: Freshman Terrence Ross put together a little spurt over the final couple of minutes, breaking a 31-all tie and helping UW to a 39-33 halftime lead.

Ross leads Washington with 11 points. Teondre Williams leads Oregon with seven.

UW shoots 44.7, Oregon 42.9. Oregon 19 rebounds, Washington 16. UW 5-of-15 on treys, Oregon 3-of-7. Eleven UO turnovers, five by Huskies.

UW led by as much as nine, score was tied once, Ducks never led.

1st/3:46 Huskies have gone cold a bit, and Ducks aren't going away yet. UW, 31-27.

1st/10:39 C.J. Wilcox checks in for Huskies. And for now, he's the only UW player who hasn't scored. Eight Huskies are on the board as UW leads, 24-15.

1st/11:50: UW, 19-12. UW shooting 53.3 percent, Ducks 28.6 percent. Oregon eight rebounds, UW seven. Four UO turnovers, three by UW.

1st/15:40: Justin Holiday opened the game with a two and a three, and the Huskies are off to a 11-4 lead. Early first fouls to Isaiah Thomas and Overton.

Tipoff: We're under way. More empty seats than usual, no doubt due to the rush-hour-unfriendly 5:30 tip.

Lineup: Venoy Overton gets the nod to replace Abdul Gaddy in the starting lineup. The Huskies will go with Overton, Thomas, N'Diaye, MBA and Holiday.

Oregon will go with Sim, Loyd, Jacob, Singler and Catron.

And by a sheer stroke of bad timing, fans attending tonight's game are being given game programs featuring sophomore Abdul Gaddy on the cover. Gaddy, of course, will miss tonight's game and the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury suffered in practice earlier this week.

Meanwhile, still no word on who will replace him tonight in the starting lineup.

However, congratulations to the Dawg Pack, who's first chant of the evening was "Abdul-Gaddy;Abdul-Gaddy..."

(Also in the Dawg Pack: a sign reading "Go Auburn."

Finally, Huskies in white, Ducks in green, btw. And a pretty straightforward, earthly green at that.
