Lotta love for UW among Pac-10 coaches

Pac-10 coaches gave a whole lotta love to Husky basketball in their weekly conference call this morning.

Asked about the conference race, both Cal coach Mike Montgomery and Ben Howland singled out UW as the team to beat.

"We just got lambasted by Washington," Montgomery said. "They looked awfully good to me." He went on to say that he'd be surprised if UW lost even four games in conference while for the rest of the teams "a lot of things could happen. There could be a lot of losses. I don't know if anybody else stands out."

Howland didn't speculate on the number of losses this season's winner might have, but he singled out Washington as the favorite.

Meanwhile, there also were compliments aplenty for junior guard Isaiah Thomas, leading up to his MVP-contender head-to-head- duel with Arizona's Derrick Williams at Hec Ed on Thursday.

Arizona's Sean Miller said that Thomas "deserves to be put in the category of the nation's top point guards" and added that he means as much to the Huskies as Williams does to the Wildcats.

One other quick note: USC's Kevin O'Neill said Oregon definitely needs to put a center line on its new basketball court; while UCLA's Howland said the line wasn't an issue and said that in person the court has an "interesting and cool look."

More to come.
