Huskies finally put away Sun Devils, 88-75

For perhaps the second straight game, it wasn't as easy as the final score might indicate. However, the Huskies finally put Arizona State away for an 88-75 win. (Here's our game story.) Their first double-digit lead didn't come until the final minute.

And as much of a struggle as it seemed at times, that 88 points represents the most allowed by ASU since coach Herb Sendek arrived five seasons ago.

"It’s never fun to play against Arizona State. … They always make it difficult and I’m just excited that we were able to come out with a victory and move on," coach Lorenzo Romar said. "My good buddy Steve Lavin said, ‘Sometimes you just have to move the chains.’ That’s what we did today. Coach Sendek just finds a way to do a good job all the time. I’m just glad we found a way. Matthew Bryan was very, very good obviously today. Our guys did a good job of going inside and getting him the basketball."

UW was led by Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who had a career-high 30 points, along with nine rebounds. Isaiah Thomas had 19 points and eight assists.

Ty Abbott and Trent Lockett led the Sun Devils with 20 points each.

"I just tried to find space," MBA said. "It’s kind of hard with that matchup. I know that their interior defense isn’t as good, that’s why the up a lot. As long as I can carve out space, coach told us there was going to be a lot of one-on-one coverage, so I should be able to go at them tonight, so that’s what I tried to do."

The result sends No. 20 Washington to 16-4 on the season and 7-1 in the Pac-10. The loss drops ASU to 9-10 and 1-6.

Now the Huskies hit a break in their schedule. They won't return to action until a week from Sunday at Washington State.

1:01 UW, 82-73 . Two Suggs free throws follow Suggs 3-points off Thomas drive and dish.

1:17 UW, 78-71. Abbott gets fourth and fifth points of the half, hitting two of three free throws after Thomas foul on trey attempt.

1:36 Thomas drive puts UW up, 78-71.

2:13 UW, 76-71 as MBA layup set his new career high at 30 points. He also has nine rebounds.

3:30 UW, 72-68. MBA matches career high with 28 points.

3:49 UW, 70-68. Sun Devils pulled even -- 66-66 -- briefly on Ty Abbott 3-pointer. C.J. Wilcox put Dawgs back in front with one three of his own.

7:35 UW, 62-58.

2nd/11:58 UW, 56-50. Bryan-Amaning is up to 24 points, four off his carrer high.

2nd/15:49 UW up, 50-45.

2nd/18:00 Thomas switches to guarding Abbott. UW gets quick start, including steal that led to Thomas ally-opp to MBA dunk. ASU calls quick time out.

Second half: ... has tipped off. The assumption would be that Lorenzo Romar mentioned to his team the usefulness of actually playing defense.

Halftime: An Isaiah Thomas three with about a minute left pushed UW back into the lead, and the Huskies are up 40-39 at half.

MBA leads all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Ty Abbott leads the Sun Devils with 13 points, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range.

ASU shooting 53.6 percent, UW 50 percent. Huskies lead on the boards, 16-11. Both teams have been careless with the ball: five steals for UW, four by Sun Devils.

1st/3:53 Those Sun Devil 3's keep coming and ASU is up, 33-27. ASU is 5-of-8 on 3-pointers.

1st/7:21: Two 3's by Ty Abbott and one by Trent Lockett and suddenly Sun Devils are ahead, 21-18.

1st/11:59 Huskies up, 13-10. Ten of those UW points from Matthew Bryan-Amaning.

1st/15:08 UW, 9-6. How it's not more is something of a mystery. The Huskies have four steals already and are regularly getting the ball into the paint ... and missing. However, I suspect the steals could outlast the misses. This one looks like it could get out of hand pretty quickly.

Tipoff: We're under way.

Lineups: For UW, the usual: Thomas, N'Diaye, MBA, Suggs and Holiday.

For ASU, Carrick Felix, Kyle Cain, Ty Abbott, Jamelle McMillan and Trent Lockett.

70 minutes till tip: Both teams out warming up. Huskies in gold, Sun Devils in maroon.

ASU personnel note:Arizona State starting guard/forward Carrick Felix and reserve Brandon Dunson missed the Thursday loss at Washington State due to illness. However, they are here today and at least Felix is expected to be available. However, Chanse Creekmur, who missed due to a death in the family, is not expected to be available.
