Huskies lose; face WSU as 3rd seed Thursday

Washington started the Pac-10 season with a road win over USC and ended it tonight with a home loss to USC: 62-60, with the Trojans leading wire to wire.

UW's two of 16 on 3-pointers (.125) marked their fewest made threes of the season. The Huskies were outrebounded 38-28.

Senior Venoy Overton led the Huskies with 15 points in his final Hec Ed appearance. Of the two other seniors honored before the game, Matthew Bryan-Amaning had 11 points and six rebounds, and Justin Holiday was held scoreless on 0-for-6 shooting.

Jio Fontan led USC with 20 points; Nikola Vucevic had 19.

Washington ends the regular season 20-10 overall and 11-7 in the Pac-10. USC ends 18-13 and 9-9.

The Huskies entered the game knowing that their place No. 3 seeding in the Pacific-10 Conference tournament was fixed regardless of result.

Washington had begun the day with a chance of climbing to the second seed. However, UCLA’s come-from-behind overtime win at Washington State kept them in the No. 2 spot.

The Huskies now will open the tournament at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Staples Center in Los Angeles against No. 6 Washington State – the only team to sweep them during the Pac-10 regular season.

After his team lost at home to the Cougars last month, Romar said he doesn’t believe WSU provides any particular matchup problem for the Huskies.

“They beat us but I don’t think it’s a bad matchup,” he said. “Their strength is their perimeter, and we have a pretty good perimeter as well. They’ve got a big guy underneath that’s pretty good, and I think we have one that’s pretty good. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad matchup.”

Here's more information on the Pac-10 tournament.

3:32 SC, 55-50. Huskies have been climbing uphill a good while. They cut it to four a while ago, then drifted back, now coming again. But time is ticking down.

7:54 SC, 49-43.

9:22 SC, 49-41. Vucevic up to 19 points. Four Huskies between 12 and eight points.

12:13 Suggs three cuts SC lead to 45-37 and finally gets crowd into it a bit.

15:56 SC, 40-28. Wilcox has missed five straight shots -- including four 3-point tries -- since hitting his first.

2nd/18:07 SC, 36-28. UW zone is making Trojans work, but Huskies can't get a rebound.

2nd half: ... has begun. C.J. Wilcox replaces Overton in lineup.

Halftime: USC 36, UW 26. Trojans have led the whole way.

Scott Suggs leads Huskies with nine points. Vucevic has 13 for Trojans.

Shooting, 50-44 SC; rebounds 19-10 SC; both teams have four assists and three turnovers.

1st/3:38 SC, 32-20. Trojans shooting .500, UW .409. Trojans 17 rebounds, Huskies eight. When SC is good, SC is very good. And tonight -- so far -- they're very good.

1st/8:00 SC, 28-17. Overton has five. Wilcox 1-for-3. Fontan and Vucevic nine for SC.

1st/11:04 SC, 21-11. Jio Fontan has nine for the Trojans. MBA leads UW with four.

1st/14:32 SC, 13-6. Trojans are 6-for-6 from the field and simply shredding UW defense so far.

Wilcox in for Overton ... and he nails his first jumper ... a two-pointer.

Tipoff: We're under way.

Lineups: UW going with an adjusted lineup for Senior Night: Venoy Overton, Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Justin Holiday, Isaiah Thomas and Aziz N'Diaye.

USC going with Alex Stepheson, Jio Fontan, Nikola Vucevic, Donte Smith and Marcus Simmons.

One hour till tip: The Huskies and Trojans are on the court warming up for their 7:30 p.m. game, which will be telecast on FSN.

Unfortunately, the days events already have dissolved some UW incentive, as the Huskies will be the No. 3 seed and face No. 6 Washington State in the Pac-10 tournament no matter what happens tonight. However, a win certainly would help the Huskies add a little extra breathing room come Selection Sunday. Plus, it's Senior Night and the team certainly should want to send Justin Holiday, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Venoy Overton out of Hec Edmundson Pavilion with a win.
